Realscreen: Fox moves into premium wildlife with Angela Bassett-narrated special

Fox is moving into the natural history space with a two-hour wildlife documentary, narrated by Golden Globe winner and Academy Award nominee Angela Bassett (9-1-1).

Malika The Lion Queen, produced by Plimsoll Productions, will travel to South Africa’s Kruger National Park, the home of lioness Malika.

The special will take viewers into the life of the lioness, exploring the role the animals play in the lion kingdom.

Tom Hugh-Jones, Martha Holmes and Grant Mansfield serve as executive producers for Plimsoll.

Basset’s (pictured) other documentary credits include The Flood (2019) and The Imagineering Story (2020).

Malika The Lion Queen premieres April 4 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Beginning April 18, the special will be available on Fox’s free streaming platform, Tubi.

“We’ve long been exploring premium wildlife specials that present an entirely new world full of emotional and aspirational stories that appeal to all viewers. In Malika The Lion Queen, we’ve found everything we were seeking,” Rob Wade, president of alternative entertainment and specials at Fox Entertainment, said in a statement. “With Angela Bassett guiding viewers along with her hallmark grace and gravitas, coupled with mesmerizing footage captured by the Plimsoll team, Malika The Lion Queen is perfect evening entertainment for the whole family.”

The special is distributed by Plimsoll-owned Magnify Media.
